• MLA – Any text generated by AI should be cited both in-text and in the works cited page.
- In-Text Example: T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” uses symbolism to show the alienation and anxiety inherent in modern society (“Describe the use of symbolism”).
- Works Cited Example: “Describe the use of Symbolism in the poem ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot” prompt. ChatGPT, 23 Mar. version, OpenAI, 7 Apr. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat.
• Chicago – Text generated by AI should be listed in the footnotes, but not in the bibliography.
- Rule: Number Originator of the communication, medium, Day Month, Year.
- Example: 1 OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI language model, response to question from author, 7 February, 2023.
- Shortened Note Rule: Number Correspondent’s last name, medium
- Shortened Example: 1 ChatGPT, response to prompt from author
• Turabian – AI can be mentioned in your text, but a more formal citation may be needed for the paper in either a numbered footnote or endnote
